Welcome to the ANSW Heavy Model and Turbine Resource page.
The ANSW Heavy Model and Turbine Inspector sub-committee is abbreviated as HMTI.
MAAA Heavy Model and Turbine requirements
The MAAA requires that Heavy and Gas Turbine powered Model Aircraft be
operated in conformance to the CASA regulations, the MAAA Manual of
Procedures, and MAAA safety requirements.
MAAA Heavy Model and aircraft Categories
Model aircraft that require certification and a valid Permit to fly under the MAAA manual of procedures (MOP015) fall under the following categories:
1) FW25: Fixed wing aircraft with a dry mass greater than 7Kgs and up to 25kgs.
2) RW25: Rotary wing aircraft with a dry mass greater than 7Kgs and up to 25kgs.
3) FW50: Fixed wing aircraft with a dry mass greater than 25Kgs and up to 150kgs.
4) RW50: Rotary wing aircraft with a dry mass greater than 25Kgs and up to 150kgs.
5) Gas Turbine: All Gas Turbine powered model aircraft including Pulse jet powered aircraft.
Any Model aircraft that falls into any of the above categories must have a valid permit to fly.
Permits to fly are issued by a MAAA Authorised inspector after a successful inspection process and and test flights have been conducted.

Step four: You will be emailed a link within a few days that will give you access to an online quiz which will test your knowledge of the MAAA Heavy model MOPS. Once you have completed the quiz and submitted it, you will be contacted by a member of the ANSW HMTI who will review your results and guide you through the questions you may have had problems with.
Step five: Arrangements will be made for you to conduct a trial inspection of an aircraft with a qualified Heavy Model inspector. Once the trial inspection is completed the trial Inspector will email or contact a member of the ANSW HMTI sub committee to discuss your performance.
Step six: The ANSW HMTI sub will review your total application package using the HMTI Assessment Guide.
The ANSW HMTI with provide recommendations to the ANSW Executive committee. Once agreed the ANSW Executive will support the application and present it to the MAAA for final appointment at the next MAAA Executive meeting. Once Appointed the ANSW HMTI will notify the new Inspector and his/her MAAA members card will be updated and sent out as a record of the endorsement.
The ANSW Inspector Application Process
The ANSW HMTI reviews each application against the specifically required criteria for each Heavy Model category (FW25, RW25, FW50, RW50 and turbine) using the HMTI Assessment Guide.
PERMIT TO FLY HEAVY- MODELS (7-150KG) &TURBINE/PULSE JET MODELS (0-150KG)
Permits to fly for heavy model aircraft are issued by an MAAA Authorised inspector after the inspection process and before the aircraft can be flown.

You can also use the PDF form available on the MAAA website if you want to go old school.

The form provides additional information to assist you with the process.
Have a play, try adding any of your aircraft that have an existing Permit to Fly.
When you fill out the online form and submit the form, you will be emailed a copy of your full record.
ANSW will then also email you a one page summary of the Permit that replicates the original MAAA038 but is digitally filled out with additional information such as a specific ANSW permit number.
This ANSW online Form (Permit to Flt) enables the collection and analysis of heavy model data by the ANSW HMTI. This will lead to a more informed approach and a better evidence based risk management system that provide feedback of any emerging issues or risks.
