WHY BECOME A MEMBER

There are many advantages of joining a club that belongs to Aeromodellers NSW.

You have potentially the greatest number of pilots in your community and each discipline is represented at one club or another. If you have a particular interest that you can’t find in your local area get in touch with us and we will connect you to the right people.

Personal and third party insurance cover is critical in our sport. It protects you, the people around you and the property that may also get in the way of your aircraft. Your membership includes these insurance and with some conditions is the cover that will help should something go wrong.

Our universal training scheme has been developed by the best in our sport and is now the National standard. We understand how to get people flying safely and we evolve our training to incorporate the best techniques that become available over time. We focus on staying ahead of training requirements of our pilots.

Having good relations with our Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) is vital for the continuation of our sport and to ensure that we can understand their perspective and requirements of Aeromodellers of Australia. We have to seek permission to fly to certain heights and for special events. It is great to get direction and support from CASA for safer flying for all in the sky.

There are a number of technical aspects of the sport and through you memberships you can reach technical assistance with all facets of aeromodelling. A quick email to any member of the executive and you will know how to find the answer to a technical question or if you are seeking knowledge and assistance, who has experience and knowledge for that category of question.

Another important aspect of being part of Aeromodellers NSW is support in handling difficult situations that arise from time to time.

For further information contact a member of the Executive and they can explain the benefits to you.

To apply to become a member please find a club near you, contact them and they will have all the forms you need to complete to gain your membership. It is worthwhile and most clubs are there to lend you a helping hand to get you started.

There are many events going on almost every weekend somewhere. No matter what type of aircraft you fly, you will find an event to attend. Please take a look at our Calendar of Events to find something of interest. If you are interested in the Pylon events, take a look at the list here.

Do you have pictures or videos or stories that you want to share with aeromodelling community, please Contact Us & we will be more that pleased to add them to our website.

NOW is a good time to start!

If you like the idea of being able to fly a model aircraft, then you need to do some investigation before you go off and buy that awesome looking, big plane with the turbo charged engines!

There is a bit to know before you get into this sport. It is all about you starting in a good place and developing your knowledge and ability. The nice part is that most members of this sport are very generous in sharing their knowledge and helping others to fly.

Your best starting point is to find your local club and have some conversations with people there. Many club members are only too keen to talk about their favourite sport and share their experiences, and that way you will learn a lot quickly.

This sport has been in existence formally since the 1930’s and in those day people built model aircraft from scratch. Today you can easily get some amazing models that have lots of clever things in them, that make the whole experience so much easier. Depending on how deeply you want get into this sport the sky’s the limit. You too can build from scratch if that is your interest or you can buy a ready to fly model (RTF) and with you knowledge on board your can be off flying and testing your skills.

Over the years clubs have figured out how to enjoy this sport with the least amount of danger and damage to your aircraft and yourself, as well as what makes sense for safety of others. Even though it is a model doesn’t mean that it can’t harm someone treated in the wrong way.

There are instructors who can help you get started. If you are interested get in touch and we will put you in contact with instructors who can help you get to the skies. Ask on the home page.

You can get to that point of buying the very slick fast thing that looks amazing, but like a Formula One racing car you really should get a license to drive first.

You need to understand how your flying ability and the power of the model you want will work together to get off the ground and flying in this sport.

You need to understand where you are going to fly and land so find a club.

Remember if you want to fly in a park you need to check with your local council to ensure that it is ok. Some councils have special areas where you can fly, while others prohibit models entirely.

Always have the necessary insurance in place. As a member of a club under our Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA) your Public Liability insurance is included as part of your membership so you are covered (within the Terms and Conditions of our policy).

This is a great sport with lots of opportunity for innovation and aviation. So get interested!

HOW DO WE FIND YOU?

Registration time comes around all too quickly and we are all busy, but……

Aeromodellers NSW relies on having up to date email addresses so we can reach clubs with all communications. The number of bounced emails we get when the newsletter is sent out is an ongoing problem that increases month by month.

The conundrum is that as people change their email address (for whatever reason) and forget to advise the Registrar, we can’t update the MAAA database and thus the emailing list. Obviously, where a newsletter bounces, Rob can’t contact that person to let them know and they likely won’t be reading the fine print of the newsletter to understand the importance.

Please discuss it with fellow members at your club gatherings and perhaps you may jog someone into contacting us (preferably via the Registrar but all executives are happy to pass the details on). Rob would appreciate it if Club Secretaries would confirm email addresses of their members when completing Affiliation Forms on this page rather than just giving them the “tick & flick”.
